Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 2 review.

An ARPG in the Baldur’s Gate franchise which in turn is in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Dark Alliance 2 originally released on the PS2 and Xbox, and at the time was tremendous fun with friends but in today’s market it is actually a little strange that this franchise would be remastered. The gameplay is a bit archaic and sluggish compared to more modern games in this genre. The lack of online function is unfortunate as it is most fun when playing with friends.

This remaster is very low effort which becomes abundantly clear when the intro cinematic starts and has not been retouched at all and still in it’s original 480p. The same resolution is on the character select screen which is very jarring but once the game starts the textures are very crisp on modern displays and it supports up to 4k native resolution.

That is pretty much the extent of the remaster. Audio has not been worked on at all and is really noticeable when different characters are talking and one is very loud and the other is barely audible. Therefore in my opinion it is just a shameless cash grab.

You start by choosing a premade character. You get a choice of 5 but with each consecutive clear of the game you unlock another with total of 7, incentivizing replayability.

The beginning is a slog with tiny linear locations and bullet spongy enemies but the further you get the game opens up with access to more locales and side quests but the low variety of enemies and environments it can become quite a slog. This was all great back in the day of PS2 and Xbox when the hardware was limited and they could not have very varied assets. This worked very well back then but for todays standard it is difficult to recommend.

With the slow and tanky combat, few options of builds, small environments and lacklustre style it is hard to recommend this game to new comers when there is a plethora of much better ARPG’s out there, and some even free to play. In conclusion do not get unless on sale, you have fond memories or want to explore a piece of gaming history.
