Clash of Chefs VR Oculus Quest

Originally released on Steam for PCVR almost 3 years ago, Clash of Chefs VR has now landed on Oculus Quest . I took it for a spin on the OQ2, so is it a bit tasty? Or a complete lemon?

It's actually pretty fun game, although not without some small issues.

The premise is pretty simple and very fun, as the chef it's your job to fill orders in a timely fashion ready for the waiter to deliver to the hungry customers.

Order start out very simple (like burger + Bun) but the complexity and number of ingredients for each order gradually increase as does the frequency of orders. So unless you're pretty dexterous and good at multitasking this are going to get frantic...in a fun way.

This gameplay loop will be very familiar to anyone who has played Overcooked before, Clash of the Chefs basically puts you slap bang in the middle of the action.

Graphically it's a little above average, I haven't payed the PCVR version so can't really compare the two platforms. But the on the OC2 everything is crisp, clear and well rendered. Perfectly functional and with no lag, or tracking issues, everything felt very responsive.

You are stationary for the game surrounded by your work surfaces, equipment and ingredients. I was able to play effectively with the default Oculus "stationary boundary".

I had no discomfort or dizziness issues while playing sessions of 60-90minutes and I am one of those people usually very susceptible to "VR sickness" so the comfort level is set pretty high here.

The environment and kitchen change up depending on which of the 4 restaurants you are working in American Diner, Mexican, Japanese and Italian.

While obviously not overly realistic, the game makes an excellent representation of processes and ingredients used to create the various dishes. Tutorial videos are on hand if you get stuck, but much of the fun for me was trial and error.

I did encounter some issues playing through the Japanese restaurant campaign, ingredients clipping through the counter, not being able to activate certain steps of the recipe etc. This forced me to cut short that particular restaurant, but I encountered no such issues with the other three.

I wasn't able to test out the multiplayer mode at the time of review as I was lucky enough to a copy from developers Flat Hill Games prior to launch. But I did check out the single player campaign and endless mode.

Both were genuinely tremendous fun and there are 80 level spread across the 4 restaurants to challenge yourself and compete for highscores on the global leaderboard.

I honestly wouldn't see myself replaying the singleplayer too often, once I had been through it. It's more of a training ground to prepare for facing off against friends online, which is where the real fun would lie in Clash of Chefs VR.

Clash of Chefs VR is available now priced $19.99 and is very reasonably priced for a fun game, this in turn becomes excellent value, if you have friends with the game to challenge.
