In the current gaming climate it seems like every other game released is either a Battle Royale or a Roguelite. Dandy Ace falls pretty much into the latter category. But how does it compare to it's contemporaries?
Dandy Ace is an isometric Roguelite ARPG, Created by Brasilian developers Mad Mimic and published by Neowiz. Dandy Ace had it's full release on PC in March to a very positive reception and gets it's console release on Nintendo Switch and Xbox today (28th Sep 2021).
The Green-Eyed Illusionist, Lele, has imprisoned Ace, the Dandy illusionist in a cursed mirror. You play as Ace and must fight your way through Lele’s ever-changing palace, combining different ability cards with more than a thousand possibilities, each with its own playstyles and powers. Every run provides new challenges and combinations l to explore as they progress to finally confront Lele.
Immediately everyone who plays this is going to compare it to Hades. So how does it stand up to the industry benchmark for roguelites? Truthfully very well!
The game plays out much the same as Hades just with a different back story, a brighter aesthetic and different abilities.
The abilities in Dandy Ace come in the guise of cards, the cards can be freely assigned to any of your controller buttons at any time and up to two cards can be combined to create unique empowered abilities.
This combining of powers is the games USP and works remarkably well.
while the difficulty is set a little on the hard side, as with all roguelites, it gets progressively easier the more you play and unlock.
At the end of each zone you get to bank currency toward permanent unlocks as well as equip game changing artifacts and fully heal, before heading out to do it all again.
Graphically the game is colourful and well presented, the various abilities are all well visualized and very different. The voice acting is also really well done, especially Lele's comments as you progress through the levels.
I'd wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Hades, it's more of the same but different enough to set it apart.
