First time I saw the trailer for Dap I thought this game could be some kind of Lemmings clone or even Pikmin but that thought was wrong.
Dap is a horror-action-adventure where you play as Dap, who is a dap and goes around gathering and protecting a pack of fragile creatures called Daps. Confused yet? I was pretty confused. The game is quite scarce on narrative, giving you only snippets of exposition here and there but that just enhances the horror aspect. Dap is an eerie game. It is strange and frightening, with it's charming pixel graphics and haunting sounds and music.
Dap is a very eerie game. Lead your Daps to safety through an eerily beautiful world, fighting off threats, solving puzzles, and avoiding the infection that twists your companions into something alien and terrifying.
Dap is a 2D isometric action game with pixel graphics. You got your standard melee attack and ranged attack with twin stick shooter mechanic, you got stamina for dodging. The gameplay consists of finding Daps, you find them floating above giant flowers like some kind of bees, start a fire and they float towards it and start to grow into fully grown Daps and get them to follow you.
You can not control them, they only follow you but you have to be careful since they are fragile and you need them to solve various puzzles ranging from the simple of just having enough Daps to a slightly more complicated of shooting targets in the correct order.
The more Daps you gain a charged ranged attack which makes each of the Daps that are following you to fire a ranged attack as well. Meaning the more Daps you have, the more missiles get fired when charged and can become extremely powerful. You and your Daps are still fragile and you need all that firepower to kill whatever comes at you before it kills your Daps.
The game can get quite hectic and tough but never unfair because the controls are very tight and responsive.
They do recommend a controller but a mouse and keyboard is very viable, a controller is definitely better but it isn't unplayable without it. The graphics are very pretty and you can really see the care that was put into the game with the different locales and scenery, all mostly dark caves, dark swamps and some savannah (I think, since it is quite dark and confusing because of the lack of narrative at that point) and wrapped up with excellent sound design and eerie music to really sell the atmosphere.
The only thing that I could really find wrong with Dap is that there was no map and I got lost quite a lot, resulting in running back and forth looking for the correct way to progress which could get a little boring but thankfully the positives outshine the negatives in this case.
In conclusion, if you like strange games with good atmosphere and action gameplay, you cant go much wrong with Dap
