Darkest Dungeon 2, a worthy sequel that builds upon the original

Are you ready to face your darkest fears (again) and test your mettle in (another) brutal and unforgiving journey? If so, then you could do far worse than checking out Darkest Dungeon II.

DD2 is a roguelike RPG that will put you in charge of a team of flawed heroes who must survive a twisted and perilous adventure.

You will have to juggle the management of  turn-based combat, procedural generation, and psychological stress mechanics that will challenge your skills and your sanity.

Darkest Dungeon II is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Darkest Dungeon, but it is not a direct continuation of the story. Instead, it is a new adventure that takes you to a different setting: a post-apocalyptic wasteland that has been corrupted by an eldritch force known as the Flame.

You travel by stagecoach across this bleak landscape, exploring various regions and landmarks that are randomly generated each run; encountering familiar foes from the first game, as well as new ones, unique to each region.

The game is just out of its early access period and offers a lot of content and replay value.

DD2 has four initially playable classes (with more to unlock): the Grave Robber, the Highwayman, the Plague Doctor, and the Man-at-Arms.

Each class has its own skills, perks, and drawbacks and you can further customize them with trinkets and quirks.

The sequel now offers a new feature called Affinities, these are bonds that form between your heroes based on their interactions and choices.

Affinities can provide bonuses or penalties to your party's performance, depending on their level and type.

The game's graphics and sound are pretty impressive. It uses the similar stylized 3D art style to the original, that creates a dark and moody atmosphere. Animations are smooth and expressive, and the game's lighting and shadows are dynamic and realistic.

The music and sound effects are suitably immersive and fitting for the game's tone; while the voice acting is superb, with narration by Wayne June, who returns from the first game.

Darkest Dungeon II is a game that will challenge you, probably slightly depress you and finally reward you for your efforts.

It is a game that will make you feel fear, anger, despair, joy, and relief.

You will definitely feel a sense of investment toward your heroes and their fate.

Overall it does exactly what this genre of game sets out to do, you will want to play again and again, to see what new horrors and wonders await you in the next run. If you are looking for a game that will push you to your limits and beyond, Darkest Dungeon II is out now on Steam
