EA and developer Stripped Bear Studios bring the beloved horror game "Dead Space" back to life in a stunning remake, released on all major platforms today, however some PC players have been experiencing performance issues and frame rates below what they would expect from the hardware.
If you have been impacted by any of these will simply want to try and increase your performance check out these handy tips.
Firstly if you are a Windows 11 user immediately go to system>display> graphics, locate Dead space and click on options. Make sure you turn off automatic and turn on high performance, also don't use 'windows optimizations' or 'auto HDR' here for this title.
Next up, open the in game settings.
Display and Graphics;
Make sure your refresh rate matches that of your monitor or TV. If you're playing on the TV you can often find this simply by pressing the "i" information button. (Usually 60Hz)
Turn Vsync 'On' to prevent any screen tearing. (I personally prefer to leave vsync off in my Nvidia settings and toggle it on or off in individual game graphic settings)
When you first fire up Dead Space, the game automatically configures the settings to what it thinks is appropriate for your hardware. This isn't always that accurate.
If you want to run the game in 4K then go down to the in game graphic settings and change it from 'Auto' to 'Custom'.
Here you can leave all of the settings on high and make your way down to 'Ambient Occlusion', you should see that this is set to RTAO, change this to SSAO for an immediate frame rate boost.
Set DLSS to Performance if applicable for your graphics card.
See how things are running now, if you are still experiencing noticeable and lengthy dips in fps then let's dig a little deeper.
Whenever you enter a new zone or area there will be a very slight drop in fps as shaders compile. However the majority of shaders should be precompiled and if you are experiencing regular dips under 20 FPS these could be the cause.
Best thing to do here, is to navigate to your steam folder and find "shadercache".
Subfolders in here are all labeled with the Steam game app ID, for the Dead space remake that ID is 1693980.
So navigate to that folder, open it and delete all of the contents; don't worry these will all be automatically re-downloaded again later ensuring any missing or corrupt files will be replaced.
Hopefully these steps would have helped to eliminate any major issues and everything else is down to personal preference and fine-tuning.
I'm currently playing through it using my living room TV, here I found the difference between 4K and 1440p is not that noticeable and I'm able to get a lot more graphical quality from my card by lowering the resolution.
I set resolution to 1440p, all graphics to Ultra, RTAO on and DLSS off. For me personally the trade off in resolution is well worth it as the game seems to look, feel and run a lot better. Constant uncapped fps between 80-100.
