Deadly Days Zombie Roguelike fun

Looking for a unique pixel based zombie strategy/survival game that pits your small team of miscreants against a post apocalyptic zombie horde?

Well look no further than "Deadly Days" from Assemble Entertainment.

Quite honestly the current market is saturated with Zombie games of all shape and size, it seems like every other release is either a zombie survival shooter or a roguelike of some kind. So I had to admit to a little trepidation as I came to review this title.

Starting the game you are greeted by chirpy pixel graphics, simple but colorful and effective and with a certain charm. A brief, useful and unpatronizing tutorial orientates you quickly to the controls, objectives and parameters of the premise.

Within minutes your are completing quests, adding allies and upgrading weapons and equipment...... and so begins the roguelite cycle into perpetuity!

The gameplay cycle simply revolves around selecting a daily mission from a random selection of three, exploring and looting your way through the map as it is slowly revealed to your party.

Each map has varying difficulty levels and completion parameters, along with optional bonus goals, such as rescuing survivors or collecting map pieces.

Initial choices are all about weighing up risk/reward, considering what resources your camp needs for basic survival versus aggressively level up.

Everything about this game is simple, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's easy to pick up and play, perfect for most ability levels and short to moderate gaming sessions. Although overall longevity mileage will vary player to player.

I have a remarkably short attention span and I think I am probably done with this game after about 4 or 5 hours. There is more I can keep going back to do, but I think I have seen and done all I want to do.

I reviewed this on Xbox, but this game really lends itself to a portable platform far more. If you have the choice go for the Switch version, or look at other mobile options such as XBox/PS streaming to mobile with a Kishi, or the forthcoming SteamDeck.

The game is reasonably priced for its content at around the $10-$15 mark, check your relevant store for details and any current discounts. (At the time of writing this its only $3.79 on Nintendo eShop, which is a no brainer - zombie pun intended!)

Key features of Deadly Days include:

  • Over 60 different crazy items and tons of powerful special abilities that can dramatically change the outcome of any battle

  • Over 25 weapon types with randomly generated modifications

  • Over 30 different survivor skins and more than 10 unique zombie and boss types that only want one thing: brains!

  • Lovingly designed pixel art style and procedurally generated cities and missions

  • Expand your base by building various rooms such as a greenhouse or mechanics room and craft crazy, unique weapons.
