Disintegration : Creates a genre nobody asked for.

Disintegration isn't a FPS and it isn't an RTS. It's a hybrid of the two which unfortunately fails to capture any of the fun of either.

So here's the back story. 150 years into the future, global warming has put mankind on the brink of natural disaster. A clever scientist came up with the idea of implanting people's brains into robot bodies in order to create less of a carbon footprint and prolong the life of our beloved planet.

This procedure was called integration and was designed to be temporary until alternative solutions were found. However a militant group called the rayonne decided they were having none of that and decided to turn all of humanity into robots.

You play the leader of a rebel band of outlaws who are taking it upon yourselves to crush the militants and reboot humanity.

The story sounds good, the gameplay premise sounds good, the studio and director sound good. (The first studio release from V1, and directed by the co-creator of Halo Marcus Lehto).

On paper everything sounds good It's just that the components don't gel, something feels off, in fact a lot of things feel off. It's just not cohesive and not fun.

From the moment you enter the tutorial to get to grips of your grav-cycle The controls feel really weird. I can't imagine who they used as a benchmark to set the default controls in that way. I spent a good 15-20 minutes in the options turning on and off various features and adjusting sensitivities.

I'm also one of those players who likes to invert the y-axis. While this works perfectly when you're using your grav cycle during missions, The invert doesn't carry through to when you're on foot. This is both frustrating and disorienting while navigating the base between missions.

The missions themselves look really nice, however you're not going to see much of that scenery nor your outlaw companions as you spend 90% of the time hovering above everything issuing repetitive commands.

You can basically either shoot things, or scan things to highlight objects and have your companions interact with them. (For example a healing nano container, If you highlight this and select it your companions will rush over and it will release a healing dome for your party.)

As well as selecting objects you highlight with your scan you can also simply move your group to a position on the ground, or highlight an enemy to have them focus their attacks on.

Each direction on the D-pad is also one of your party member's "special attack" , this could be something such as a concussion grenade or a slow grenade.

That is pretty much all there is to it as you make your way through the various checkpoints of each mission.

I really didn't find it very much fun at all. In fact I find it difficult to think of anybody who could find it fun. Anyone who enjoys RTS games would probably find the FPS element too much of a chore, not to mention the awful AI of your party. Likewise any FPS fans would most likely find the RTS element to distracting, not to mention the awful AI of your party.

In fact while playing disintegration reminded me far more of a god sim than anything else. Constantly floating above your party and issuing orders feels disjointed, there's nothing really to anchor you to the action and make you feel part of the experience, or care what happens to your companions.

In the games defense, it does look nice, it has a slick presentation and the cut scenes are quite compelling and well-produced.

The game was originally going to be released as an RTS but the studio thought that it lacked originality. With hindsight it might have been better because as a hybrid it seems to alienate both schools and needs to find a new demographic.

yeah I have heard similar observation about this game on other sites. It really seems they created a genre no one asked for. Hopefully it finds it's audience. PS some of the pictures are quite blurry
