Elden Ring first week impressions

Our first week with Elden Ring.... 40 hours in, a lot of exploring under my belt..an awful lot more left to do. But here are my initial impressions. The sheer scale and yet deliberacy with which each part of the vast world has been thoughtfully crafted is simply astounding to me. Try looking back to the homogenized cookie cutter copy/paste Ubisoft style open world adventures now and they all feel somewhat bald.

Feels like I've been constantly playing it since release, yet hardly put a dent in it. Every moment has been either fantastic discovery and development and it's all killer, no filler. It manages to strike a perfect balance between the wonder of discovery and the apprehension of the unknown, but always manages to tip the balance in favour of the former and gently nudge you into the world. An absolute masterclass and open world games will never be the same again. It's only really punishing until you immerse yourself in their world, think how they think, then you start to preempt where things will ambush (pretty much every chest) Haven't met an enemy as yet that I feel is unfair. As impossible as it may seem at first there's always an alternative approach that makes it trivial.... Or go do something else and come back in a few levels and PWN it.

Cleverly the game let's you create your own narrative and the main is reactive to your accomplishments thus far. It steers you in a direction but never imposes it's will, it's perfectly flexible if you decide to do things differently. It won't be everybody's cup of tea but it's more accessible than it first appears and definitely more rewarding and compelling than any other open world rpg I think I've played to date.
