Foretales is a new card based game from French developers Alkemi. However it's a very different kind of card game than we're used to.
Usually when you see 'card' or 'deck' in a game description you immediately think of anything in-between Slay the Spire and Hearthstone. However Foretales is quite unique in it's approach and it's much more of a traditional tabletop RPG than anything else.
You play the game through the eyes of Volepain an anthropomorphized avian of sorts and professional thief; who along with a team of other uniquely skilled furries, must thwart a prophecy of destruction.
The game is played out on a beautiful tabletop environment using various decks of cards. The story is told entirely though these decks in a loosely similar manner to "voice of the cards".
There are ability cards, character cards, encounter cards and location cards. You can drag various action or ability cards onto location cards to interact.
For example, you might use Volepains 'light fingers' skill on a market location and manage to steal some food, or incur the wrath of the local guard, or even both.
Once you interact with the location, regardless of the outcome, a new environmental card is drawn and the story progresses. This gives you tremendous freedom to approach situations however you feel.
As well as the decks there are other resources to be managed along the way, these include wealth, food, fame and notoriety. These can be used to approach problems to defuse encounters heal, or in the case of unique items or NPCs, progress the story.
The way that foretales creates a vibrant world and gives you the freedom to interact with it, from a simple table top and deck of cards is very impressive.
The interface is clean and easy to use the art is beautiful, with the voice acting and writing being equally good.
Foretales his neither a traditional RPG or deck builder but something quite different and very refreshing, out now on Steam and Nintendo eShop, it's definitely worth the look for fans of either genre.
