Here is a quick setup guide to running shadowsocksR, a perfect solution for gaming inside the great firewall!
Disclaimer type thing:
Before you begin please note that this isn't super hard but it requires a moderate amount of knowledge and maybe a bit of google-fu to fine tune for your setup.
By all means have a try but i'm not responsible for any mishaps, bricking, breakages or rage.
You will also need to be able to read Chinese, either by friend/loved one, translation software on your PC or Phone, or by studying it for years if your a complete Luddite.
Likewise I'm not able to dish out any other advice beyond this basic tutorial.
You will also need to pay for the service using an Alipay or Wechat account that is connected to a Chinese ID card holder (accounts connected to a foreign passport number wont work). So for this you can get a friend to scan the payment QR code , or maybe send a screenshot, have them pay and transfer them the money.
Let's get going then...
OK for this you are going to need an extra router, I used a cheap 360 P2, you can grab these for 80-100rmb on Taobao. You're going to want to flash some new firmware that you can find on this site: https://bitbucket.org/padavan/rt-n56u/src
Connect a LAN cable from your current router to the WAN port of the 360 router, then connect the LAN port of 360 router to the computer.
Connect the 360 router to the computer, start Google Chrome on your PC and enter the setup/diagnostics 192.168. whatever
Next up, copy and paste the link below to register with the service provider for the SSR. There are plenty of others available, so feel free to shop around, but I have used this one with no problems and the pricing is pretty decent.
I chose 200GB data for 60rmb, but there are several tiers you can choose from.
If you run out of data you can just buy another service pack so its no biggy.

After the purchase is complete, click User Center, click Product Services...
Select Standard service...
Click on shadowsocksr to copy the subscription link
Then:
1. Log in to the 360 router, select the icon that looks like a paper plane
2. Turn on the switch type icon
3. Select SSR as the proxy type
4 Paste the SSR subscription link you previously copied and click Update
5. There's a short loading screen, after that click Apply.
Next up you can select the server location you want to connect to, Japan and HK are the fastest by a little, but choose the server that best suits your needs.
Click the first green button, then the long blue one and you should be good to go!
You can always refer back to the toworld.io website to check your data usage and buy more if needed (from "My Services" dropdown menu).
(I consume an obscene amount of data).
Thats it, hope this helps!
As always there is plenty more info online and in forums, if all else fails then there are plenty of prepackaged VPN services available, most of which you can pay for with unionpay if your account is set for online payments.
As a final note if you decide to go down the VPN service route:
I would advise against using ExpressVPN, despite their claims to be the "best in China", they are truly awful and have been for a couple of years now. If you intend on using their service in your router it's offline more than its on.
However Astrill works very well, especially for things like Netflix.
I haven't personally tired any others.
That's it for this blog, please feel free to leave comments or any info on services you would recommend to others, good luck and Happy Gaming !
