This is the first update for the “Games I Hate” Blog series.
It’s been a week now and I honestly hate “Zelda: Breath of the Wild” much, much less than I did ! This is progress…
Things I have done differently this time around:
Playing it with the Pro Controller.
Playing it docked, from my bed in the evenings, using a projector.
Casual mindset, not trying to just power through.
Firstly I appreciate the visuals far more this time, the art style and graphics really lend themselves to playing on larger screen and I’ve noticed many more nice touches than I did first time around. Even found myself taking some screenshots of the beautiful sunrises and really noticed the draw distance and detailed backgrounds; very impressed they managed to squeeze this performance out of the little Switch.

I think the biggest difference to my newfound increased appreciation has been in my mindset and approach to the game.
I’m playing in in shorter sessions, during the evening and more relaxed, just using the time to explore a bit more and letting the game develop and progress more organically. This is in stark contrast to my initial playthrough where I was constantly driving the story, which proved frustrating and at times confusing.
Breaking the game up into smaller areas and really taking the time to investigate my surroundings has offered some rewarding encounters and discoveries. Cooking and raiding enemy camps is in no way a chore when part of a “bite sized” gaming session.
My approach to combat is different this time too, collecting far more weapons and using them almost as an “ammo reload” when they break rather than getting annoyed. I’m also far more reactive in the physicality of combat than I was and always on the look out for more creative ways to dispatch enemies.
So I now definitely don’t hate BoTW, but I’ve still a long way to go to love it. I’m warming to it’s charm and will continue to play it and report back.
If you have any tips or suggestions for getting the most from BoTW, it would be great to hear in the comments or via the newgroup. Likewise if you have a request for the next “Game I Hate” I should replay and reappraise, be sure to let me know!
