The Steam Deck has proven to be an incredibly successful entry into the gaming market, even more so as production volumes ramp up, and sales open up new different markets internationally.
While it's a fantastic way to enjoy your steam library "on the go", it isn't without it's performance and compatibility issues.
Here are three quick and easy adjustments you can do to help increase the performance, stability and compatibility of your steam deck.
1. Increase the UMA VRAM to 4GB in the bios. To access the bios, hold down the Vol+ button and then press the power button. It should then boot into the BIOS menu, click 'setup utility' then you can change the UMA frame buffer size from the 1GB default to 4GB.
2. Check out the fantastic SteamDeck utilities from @CryoByte33 and run the scripts making the suggested changes.
There are a couple of different ways of doing this, both very simple. and Full instructions, along with the script can be found on the GitHub page linked below:
3. Add GE Proton (glorious eggroll). Below is a link to a really good article below by James Archer, from Rock Paper Shotgun. It walks you through painlessly through the short process and having this compatibility option on your deck helps tremendously with getting difficult titles to run.
These three, small adjustments made a fairly noticeable difference to my deck; particularly with the games not yet deck verified.
If your still having problems with a particular game, it's well worth checking out "ProtonDB".
They have a full list of all Steam titles, their level of Deck compatibility, as well as individual game fixes and tweaks from the community.
As always use due diligence, take your time to read through the directions and all tweaks, modifications and adjustments are made at your own risk.
