King of the Seas Review (Switch)

Originally announced in 2020, developed by 3DClouds and published by Team17, "King of Seas" is a top down ARPG set in a beautiful procedurally generated world.

In King of Seas, you take on the role of either Marylou or Luky, heirs to the King's Fortress kingdom.

After returning from the initial tutorial mission, you soon find yourself framed for the murder of your father (the King) who was mysteriously killed during your quest.

Sentenced to death your ship is destroyed and you are left for dead on the open sea. Rescued by pirates you learn to live an outlaw's life while trying to find your father's real killer and retake your rightful place on the throne.

The game is a strange mix of a kind of Torchlight meets Sunless Skies, instantly familiar yet quite unique in its own way. A colourful blend of ship management, trading, combat and side missions all set to an almost "Civ" like changing world state that influences how the story unfolds.

Controls are ship centric and rotate port or starboard and weapons are controlled with RT for right side canons and LT for left side canons.

Velocity is controlled with the bumpers RB lowering the sails to speed up while LB raises them in increments to slow down.

Different ships have different "specials" that can also be activated, ranging from shark attacks to AOE incendiary fireworks. Combat damage is taken and received across three criteria sail damage, hull damage and crew damage.

Sail damage impacts speed and handling, hull damage is overall integrity and crew damage affects cooldowns and performance.

All in all a well presented, fun take on an ARPG, touches nicely on many aspects while remaining accessible and fun for a casual gamer.

King of Seas is available now on Playstation, Switch, Xbox and PC priced $24.99 at the time of writing.
