Omen of Sorrow is new horror take on a traditional 4-button fighting game, featuring monsters and characters from classic horror cinema and literature.
Omen of Sorrow has been developed by independent Chilean studio AOne Games in partnership with publisher Eastasiasoft.
The character roster includes horror icons such as Frankenstein’s monster, Egyptian high priest Imhotep, The headless horseman and Mr. Hyde, as well as many others.
The game has some really nice character design, although some characters seem far more polished than others. It's quite fun seeing their transition to a fighting game and what abilities each brings to the arena.
Gameplay itself is a little more patchy however.
If you haven't played games like Street fighter Alpha, then you're probably going to be at a bit of a loss as to what all the different bars and meters mean; Omen of Sorrow does a very poor job of explaining these. Super bar, Fortune bar, Fate bar??
Combat also feels a little bit jerky, not as fluid as I would have liked, which can cause some timing issues when stringing combos together.
The game does include both a story and versus mode, however the story mode just seems to have been tacked on as an afterthought and has very little "story" especially when you compare it to games like MK11 or even Injustice.
It's honestly quite difficult to see who this game is aimed at.
It feels slightly inaccessible and complicated with little explanation for new players, while lacking the polish and fluidity that more seasoned players would be looking for.
However the Omen of Sorrow is quite fun for a playthrough and definitely worth looking into for fans of the genre particularly as it's very reasonably priced at $19.99 (Currently $15.99 at the time of this review with an introductory discount until Sep 29th on Microsoft/Xbox store)
