The Saints Row reboot has had a fair bit of stick in it's launch week. But while some of it is deserved, overall I thought it was a pretty fun game and an enjoyable (if sightly frustrating at times) experience.
The Game starts with your created character as the alpha crime boss then quickly rewinds to become an origins story. A tutorial mission, that familiarizes you with the controls, sees you in your first day at a new job. Working as part of a private militia, you soon find that the pay doesn't cover the rent and you must find other, less legit ways, to make ends meet.
The initial cut scenes honestly look a bit ropey, it's one of a few reminders punctuating the game to make you feel it's not quite a AAA production. The character animations seem a little stiff and some of the faces look a bit PS3 era.
Once you get into the game however, it does start to look a lot better.
The in game presentation looks a lot more polished and there are a decent amount of display settings to tweak it to your liking. I reviewed it on Xbox SeriesX and the game looked and ran great on the higher resolution and fidelity settings.
Gameplay wise it's a bit more hit and miss.
I personally really enjoyed the combat elements. I've seen a few complaints that it's too simplified, but I found the sticky targeting in keeping with some of the more fast paced action, it keeps the momentum and let's you feel powerful, without feeling indestructible.
Where the game really drops the ball is with vehicles. For such a large part of the gameplay it's incredibly buggy and woefully underdeveloped. Glitches and bugs here ruin the overall immersion of the game and really can cause frustration in some instances. Bugs aside, the driving as a whole just feels 'off', the vehicles don't seem to handle correctly.
Saints Row has always been a pretty extreme affair with bizarre side missions and crazy set pieces. For me SR3 was about the sweet spot while SR4 went a bit too far and wasn't as enjoyable. The Saints Row reboot dials it back to a reasonable amount of crazy and has some great dialogue, voice acting and story elements.
However instead of distilling the franchise experience, it just dilutes it. There's too much filler, the open world seems a bit too 'open' and empty, void of any impactful content. Side quests just seem repetitive and more of a box ticking exercise for the most part.
Overall there's a good game in there if you stick to the main story and avoid driving as much as possible. Fingers crossed for some incoming bug patches. Might be worth waiting a bit if you're going to purchase at full price, but it's definitely one to pick up in a sale.
