At first, I thought this was Spelunky and was very excited to review this game but when I booted it up it wasn’t Spelunky but Spelunker an old NES game and I realized I have actually played it before when I was a young kid.
I remember it being very difficult and when I played the remaster, I discovered that it was still ridiculously difficult. The game is staying absolutely true to the original in gameplay.
The graphics have been spruced up but with the option to play it with “original” graphics though I suspect they have been touched up as they seem smoother and crisper than my memory.
Now I am struggling to write a comprehensive or even a long review for this game because I think the gameplay does not fit for modern gamers.
It is too different from what people are used to, for example if your character falls from a higher than ankle height he will die. This is an extremely silly thing to witness in game when you are trying to jump from a ladder to a ledge and you are just a tiny bit too high from the ledge and your character just dies when he “lands”. Games back in the NES day were all very difficult, mainly as a means to longevity and due to their difficulty most of the games from that era are all very memorable.
Which is all good but today people are used to different games, games that hold your hand more often than not.
As it stands, I am not sure how many people would be interested in playing this game except maybe the 40 something adults that played it extensively as kids and want a little nostalgia. I personally do not have that and could not enjoy this at all. I would have thought maybe they would tweak the gameplay a little bit for the modern consumer but on the other hand there is something to preserving the gameplay exactly as it was but I do not see that to be very popular in today’s gaming environment.
In conclusion the game is not very good unless you have fond memories of playing it back in the days of NES, Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64.
