Roguelites are all the rage these days. From dungeon crawlers to platformers, there's a roguelite game for every genre and taste. But what about sports games? Can you make a roguelite game out of ice hockey? The answer is yes, and it's called Tape To Tape.
Tape To Tape is the debut game by 'Excellent Rectangle', a small indie studio based in Canada. The game is inspired by the classic arcade hockey games of the 90's, such as NHL '94 and Blades of Steel. But unlike those games, Tape To Tape adds a twist: it's a roguelite adventure.
In Tape To Tape, you create your own ice hockey team and take them on a journey to the major leagues. But instead of following a linear career mode, you have to navigate a branching map of matches, each with different rules, challenges and modifiers.
You might face a team of giants, or play on a slippery ice rink, or have to score with a tiny puck. Along the way, you can recruit new players and upgrade your equipment when you're not on the ice (or when you lose and have to start over). There are also customization elements for your team's name, logo, and colors.
The game has a lot of variety and replay value, as no two runs are ever the same. The gameplay itself is fast-paced and fun, with simple controls and retro graphics. You can check your opponents, shoot the puck, and even fight them and knock them about with special abilities if you're feeling particularly feisty.
Tape to Tape features a Play Now mode, where you can play exhibition matches with any team and settings you want. It's a game that will appeal to both fans of roguelites and fans of sports games. A game that combines strategy and skill, humor and challenge, nostalgia and innovation. But more than anything it's a game that will make you cheer, swear and laugh out loud.
This is a genuine hidden gem that you should definitely try. Tape To Tape is available now on Steam for Windows and Mac.
