I was kindly given a key to review Testament: The Order of High Human some time ago. At that point it was an awful mess and simply not worth reviewing. So here we are a few months later when they've had a chance at a few patches and decided to revisit and try again.
The game's visuals and graphics are impressive for a game made by a small team of 15 people. Some areas of the game utilize very cool lighting that really pops in the puzzle sequences. Controlling the character for exploring and solving puzzles felt OK and similar to playing other first-person puzzlers like The Witness, except here you can climb ropes, jump and run.
The game offers combat in the form of different combinations of sword, spells, and bow. However it is very unbalanced and the bow is the clear winner.
The game's combat progression is very flawed. There is a huge and very immediate difficulty spike in which basic rank and file enemies simply become damage sponges. Ruthless hordes rush at you and combat mechanics begin to fail. The game tries to present itself as giving the player choice in combat, but most of the time, you will be forced to use the sword in a desperate attempt to stave off the assault of enemies.
Testament: The Order of High Human is an interesting passion project that shows a lot of character but it's very rough around the edges.
The gameplay is fun for a while, but the combat loop can begin to feel tedious and sluggish and ultimately makes the game unplayable.
Unfortunately nothing much has changed since I had my first impression sometime ago while visually impressive there's unfortunately no real fun game play to be had here is essentially a tech demo and really not worth investing anytime or money in.
However if you are interested and would like to see for yourself the game is currently on sale via Steam with 65% off at the time of writing this review.
