It's been the best part of a year, if not longer since I have played Red Dead Online.
I adored the single player game and was quite excited to try the online open world, but ultimately disappointed.
I'd powered through the main campaign in a few sittings and very little sleep, so was ready to get into online on its very launch.
It was unfortunately full of griefers and trolls, glitches and exorbitantly price weapons. Despite this I soldiered on, only to be disappointed as to how little there was to do.
I even started to understand why the trolls were trolling.
While the scenery was beautiful, there was precious little to keep a gamer engaged. So I shelved the game and promised to return once the bugs were squished and the content fleshed out.
So here I am a year later, giving it another go.
I logged in and couldn't remember a single control, except the ubiquitous L & R aim and fire.
Couldn't even mount my trusty steed "buttercup", instead I managed to royally twat her and in turn receive a well deserved hoof to the nethers.
My folly continued... I seem to recall being able to autochat with the NPC's. However I struggled to greet a well dressed gentleman outside the Blackwater post office and only managed to shoot him in the face.
I teamed up with a friend who had been playing through the new classes and he gave me a quick refresher; in much the same way as a tech savvy child furnishes an elderly relative with a plethora of button combinations they will never remember.
Honestly , still not that impressed.
The loading times are painfully long and coupled with constant disconnects server side really put a dampener on immersion and fluidity.
While a lot of content seems to have been added, the little I got to see was still not really engaging.
Delivering a wagon load of random old shit to a location the other side of the map put me in mind of Death Stranding for the 20 minutes of uneventful riding to the destination.
I'm not saying it's bad...yet. I really need to invest more time to do the game justice.
Question is, do I really want to invest that amount of time when there is so many other games that beg to be played?
The main Story is one of the best gaming experiences out there and I couldn't recommend it enough. But online? If you have a lot of spare time and nothing else to play, then go for it.
If your looking for an mmorpg experience, then look elsewhere. However as a sandbox in which to mess around with a few friends and see what happens it still provides flashes of brilliance and belly laughs all around
I'll check back in another year :)
check it now. It is brilliant but it is not a mmo. Love the online bit
