Trinity Trigger a must for old school JRPG fans

A friend recently described a game to me as "cozy", in the same week I played Trinity Trigger and understood what he meant perfectly.

Trinity Trigger is a heavily retro-inspired action RPG that lets you team up and save the world from a war between the gods.

It's the video game equivalent of those adverts you see with the woman on the sofa, wearing an oversized hoodie pulled over her knees, as she holds a warm cup of something with both wrapped around the cup.

Developed by FuRyu and Marvelous (XSEED), the game is a love letter to the golden age of JRPGs, with colorful graphics, catchy music, and simple but fun gameplay.

Released for Switch, PC and PlayStation 5 back in April. You play as Cyan, the Warrior of Chaos, who is chosen by the gods to fight against the Warrior of Order in a battle that will decide the fate of the world.

Along with your friends Elise and Zantis, and your saccharin cute (and powerful) partners called Triggers, you travel across the world of Trinitia to find the Weapons of the Gods; huge weapons that have fallen from the sky and are now home to both monsters and mysterious secrets.

The game's combat system is one of those 'easy to learn and hard to master' affairs, using real-time action that lets you switch between eight different weapons for each character.

Each weapon has its own abilities and stats, and can be upgraded with gems that boost their effects. There is also further customization that allows you to set up each stage of your attack combo.

You can also use items and skills to heal or buff your party, or unleash devastating attacks with your Triggers.

Trinity Trigger's difficulty is balanced and beginner-friendly, but also offers some challenge and strategy for veterans, but it's no souls like ARPG.

Graphics are bright and charming, with a vibrant art style that captures the spirit of '90s JRPGs. Environments are varied and detailed, with different biomes and landmarks to explore. Likewise the game's character models are expressive and well animated, with different outfits and accessories to choose from.

The music is a standout, both catchy and memorable, with a mix of orchestral and synth tunes that fit the mood of each scene. But for the love of all that is sweet and holy, do not select the English voices they are shockingly bad! Stick to Japanese voice with English subs.

The game's co-op mode is a rare feature for a JRPG, and it adds a lot of fun and replay value to the game. You can play with up to two friends. You can choose which character to control, or switch between them at any time.

Co-op mode is seamless and smooth, with no noticeable lag or glitches.

The only gripe I have with Trinity Trigger is its lack of originality and depth. Especially given the experience and pedigree of the developers.

The game's story is predictable and a little too clichéd, with few surprises or twists along the way. Characters are likable but stereotypical, one dimensional and with little development or growth throughout the game. Side quests are pure filler and repetitive, with simple tasks and rewards that don't add anything to the game.

While the game's world is beautiful it's extremely linear, with little freedom or exploration to enjoy.

Trinity Trigger is a game that pays homage to the classics of the genre, but doesn't innovate or improve much on them. The game's gameplay is enjoyable, accessible, and comfortable, but also shallow. Likewise, the game's graphics are appealing and nostalgic, but also generic and dated.

It is possible to do 'old school' and innovate Xseed themselves have proved this in previous releases. There is a lot here to love if you're someone who is nostalgic for these types of JRPG, but if you fall outside of this demographic there's not much to entice you in or keep you playing.
