Warhammer 40K: Speed Freeks – Early Access and Gameplay Overview

Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks brings the chaos of Ork death rallies to your screen.

This free-to-play, team-based multiplayer game offers intense vehicular combat across several modes, including Kill Konvoy and Deff Rally, where two teams of eight race and battle to capture objectives or slow down the enemy’s Stompa.

After multiple open alphas and betas, Speed Freeks is now in Early Access before its full release later this year, promising new maps, vehicles, and features. Customization is a key element, with options to modify your ride’s appearance via bodykits, rims paint jobs etc. In-game purchases seem to be limited to cosmetics.

Is Speed Freeks the vehicle combat game we've been waiting for? Twisted Metal for a new generation? Time will tell, but it’s a decent enough entry and free, so give it a go and try for yourself.

Personally I found the control scheme to be a little tricky to adapt to. I generally play a lot of competitive FPS and my muscle memory was fighting against the concept of driving and shooting. Perhaps with more time it would become second nature, or you may find it easier coming from a background in driving games.

Playing in the first week of early access I also found the game to suffer with some performance issues, mostly in the way of hefty and arbitrary fps dips, but also some latency problems. Hopefully just teething problems that will be resolved in a patch or two.
